It has been a hard run for three-quarters of my life. If I can last another quarter mile, I'll be dead.
My old track coach drilled into my head, "Turn on the after-burners in the final quarter-mile."
Catch 22. Run faster. Die quicker.
Joseph Heller's character, Dunbar, had it right: Run slowly. Cultivate boredum. When one is bored, time goes slowly. Life will last longer.
The last quarter of my life will be very long.
